Our “mui Platform” can turn any IoT devices and systems into “calmer” ones. Modern devices are synonymous with distraction and information overload, forcing users to crouch over smart screens. Our proprietary technologies and design techniques enable companies to create products—be it a display, speaker or cloud system—that are comfortable and intuitive to use. Users can receive only necessary information in an effortless manner. We use technologies to enable people to live even more humanly than they already do. Focusing on natural materials like wood, the platform promotes designs that blend seamlessly into the aesthetics of home living spaces.

What is mui Platform?

We developed our “mui Platform” to make peaceful digital living possible. The platform consists of our proprietary IoT cloud system and a set of IPs that enables our wooden interface to function as an alternative to conventional touch panels. All elements of the platform work together to create “calm” digital experiences. We help companies design their own “calm” connected devices and products by using some or all of our IPs, making them available through licensing. mui Platform is designed to keep people from getting bombard with meaningless information. It uses our proprietary technology to transmit the right amount and types of information. By doing so, the platform helps people stay focused on important matters and activities, such as family conversations, without any distraction, to build better and healthier relationships with their loved ones. Our platform can turn various non-conducting materials, including wood, into a touch-sensitive display panel. What makes this transformation possible is our globally patented structure of display components. Our proprietary technology, along with our design techniques, enables us to use organic materials that provide comfort to people to seamlessly integrate technology into our lives. The purpose of our platform isn’t to transmit information, but to wisely use information to enrich people’s lives. And that sets our platform apart from all conventional interfaces.

Our Engineering Approach

We design devices in a way that makes users forget that they are there. The interface for our platform looks like a beautifully sanded piece of wood, blending well with the aesthetics of home living spaces. We use wood also because humans like to touch organic materials, and the warmth of wood makes our technology feel as natural and pleasing-to-use as furniture. Our platform only transmit essential information to help users enjoy tasks and activities that matter to them, such as conversations with their families, without any distraction. We believe it’s important for people to keep a healthy distance from digital information. Providing people with the right amount and types of information can nudge people into taking action, rather than simply consuming the information. And this helps people make connections with each other.

muiの革新性

Our Story

Computers used to have little to do with our personal lives. Developed to process information quickly and accurately, “automatic computing machines,” or computers of the last century, mostly served as tools to support industrial, commercial and academic activities. As the use of “personal” computers grew commonplace more recently, however, computers became an increasingly integral part of our everyday lives. Nonetheless, computers are still machines that are meant only for logical input and output of information. They are not created with the emotional aspect of human communication — or its importance to our well-being — in mind. Digital technology has now advanced to the point where society won’t function without it, and this has prompted the ongoing movement to re-examine digital ethics (the relationship among digital information and devices, humans and society). We believe this trend is a natural response to humans’ inherent desire to achieve more optimal well-being. It also goes to show digital technology still has much to be improved.&nbsp; Back in the 1990s, the late American computer scientist Mark Weiser envisioned “ubiquitous computing” – the term he coined – to be the future of computing. He imagined small computers would weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it,” as he wrote in his article published in the September 1991 issue of Scientific American.&nbsp; Unlike virtual reality that takes people away from the physical world, the ubiquitous computing that Weiser envisaged would enable people to experience true reality at a deeper level. Computers will be omnipresent and invisible, quietly supporting human communications.&nbsp; It turns out Weiser’s vision partially came true in the sense that we communicate with each other every day without giving the slightest thought to how technology makes it possible. Social media may be a good example of it.&nbsp; This omnipresence of digital technology is taking us into a much different direction from how Weiser had imagined it, however, thanks to the rise of the “attention economy.” Digital technology is now being used as a tool to promote the attention economy, rather than as a means for us to stay connected with one another in a meaningful manner. Even when we are with someone, our minds aren’t there. This social phenomenon concerns us all.&nbsp; Engendering a healthy relationship between humans and computers is one of the most important objectives to work toward when designing and implementing digital technologies. No technology should cause any harm to users, emotional or physical.&nbsp; “Most important, ubiquitous computers will help overcome the problem of information overload,” Weiser wrote in his Scientific American article. “There is more information available at our fingertips during a walk in the woods than in any computer system, yet people find a walk among trees relaxing and computers frustrating. Machines that fit the human environment instead of forcing humans to enter theirs will make using a computer as refreshing as taking a walk in the woods.”&nbsp;&nbsp; ”Calm Technology” is a technology design concept based on Weiser’s vision. mui Lab tapps into this concept, in combination with the Japanese sense of beauty – the “essence” of traditions and the spiritual way of life that we see every day in Kyoto – to design user interfaces (UIs) and user experiences (UX) that make technology disappear from our consciousness and become part of you and your environment.&nbsp;The technology that enables humans to make the most of their abilities is what we are aiming to create.&nbsp; We don’t measure the value of digital technology based solely on how much more efficiently and productively it can perform automated tasks, because the faster automation gets, the less human touches it will have. We look for an ability in technology to make up for the lost humanity — the lost warmth of human communication — and that’s how we judge digital technology’s worth. Humans seek comfort and peace, and the environment that allows them to be themselves, in their everyday lives. “Yohaku no Design (Designs that incorporate empty space),” our design approach that brings together all the key factors for making such digital living possible, serves as the foundation for our UI/UX designing.&nbsp; Nonverbal information, such as gestures and facial expressions that reveal our feelings, as well as somatic sensations, textures and temperatures that our bodies detect when we touch something, are all important for human survival and our enjoyment of life. Yet, computers are near-incapable of conveying such information. At mui Lab, we work to create the digital technology that can communicate all and any information that is important in human living.&nbsp; For example, we use wood to make our flagship product, “mui Board,” because touching wood – the natural material that was part of human lives throughout human history – can provide soothing sensation to users. This fits right in with our design approach that gives serious consideration to the effects our devices have on users’ five senses. The mui Board also lets people use their fingers to handwrite messages on the wood surface. This not only creates a physical sensation for those who send their messages, but also enables the recipients to see the senders’ handwritings and feel emotional connections with them. In addition, the mui Board can work with smart lighting to gradually adjust its brightness to help you wake up in the morning. Designed based on humans’ circadian rhythm, the lighting grows brighter in increments – instead of switching between on/off modes – letting your body sense the subtle changes in the environment. And we believe that is a good example of the “mui shizen” design.&nbsp; In the meantime, “muihaus” (the house that lets you be you)&nbsp;incorporates “Height Marking in Wood,” the digital system that stores handwritten messages scribbled on the wooden column and displays them from time to time. As a past message glows from within the column, gently emerging on its surface, it can create an illusion of it floating in the air. The display would bring back all the memory associated with the message for the user, including the tender emotions they may have felt the first time they read it. And that would give the user an opportunity to learn something new from the past experience and take some kind of action in response to it.&nbsp;&nbsp; At mui Lab, we strive to create “Calm UIs” that connect people and digital technology in a peaceful manner, so we all can enjoy living in the way humans are meant to.&nbsp;&nbsp; Our technologies are created to help people appreciate the imperfections of humans and nature. In designing the user experience, we make it a point to include some “margins” that allow for imagination and emotional engagement. The Japanese sense of “mujo” (impermanence) and “wabi-sabi” (the quiet simplicity and subdued refinement) are part of what we value.&nbsp; We want digital technology to become something that people see as essential to joyous living – something that they accept and grow to love, as if it were a member of their family. To make our vision reality, we work with our clients to create new products and services that pay attention to all of the three key factors: idea, design and engineering.&nbsp; We hope everyone will benefit from our products created around the Calm Technology &amp; Design approach and will be able to enjoy the calm and peace that they deliver.&nbsp;

情報テクノロジーが穏やかに人と自然と調和している状態を実現する為、mui Labは、マーク・ワイザーの提唱した「Calm Technology （カーム・テクノロジー：生活に溶け込む情報技術）」の設計思想と日本的な美意識を融合させ、無為自然なデジタルテクノロジーの佇まいを設計し、社会へ実装しています。 元々、コンピューターは人の人生とは無関係でした。その訳語が「電子計算機」であるように、国や産業の場で論理的情報処理を担うために開発されました。その後、一般利用の需要拡大に伴い、パーソナル化が進み、PC（パーソナルコンピューター）として人の人生に大きく関わるようになっていきました。しかし、コンピューターはそもそも情報処理を早く正確に多く行うために作られたものであり、私達人間が日常的に行っている非言語情報に関わる感覚情報を用いたコミュニケーションを、円滑で良好に行えるようには元来設計されていません。今やデジタルテクノロジーが社会の重要な役割を担うほどに発展したことに伴い、ウェルビーイングが声高に叫ばれ、デジタル倫理（デジタル情報やデジタル機器そのもののあり方）が見直されつつありますが、それは人間が求める自然な欲求であり、デジタルテクノロジーが発展途上であることを窺い知れます。&nbsp; &nbsp; ところで、21世紀の目指すべきコンピューティングの姿としてワイザーが1990年前後に予言していたのは、コンピューターがいたるところに偏在する（ユビキタスな）あり方でした。そこでは、ただ小さくなったデバイスがたくさんばら撒かれるのではなく、日常生活の環境に編み込まれ、見えなくなって不可分になっていくことが高らかに謳われていました。

ユビキタスコンピューティングで掲げられていたコンピューターの人々の社会生活への寄与という点では、例えば極度に発展したSNSなどのツールでは、コンピューターの存在が意識されないレベルにまで生活に溶け込み、人間同士の交流を助けるような存在にることが一部達成されたとも言えます。世界中の人々がつながることができるようになった現在、パーソナルコンピューター化とインターネットの普及によって民主化の第一フェーズは達成されたとも言えるでしょう。&nbsp; しかし、アテンションエコノミーが到来し、デジタルテクノロジーの現状は、それらツールの創作者の意図をも超える（代）物になってしまっていると言わざるを得ません。&nbsp; 人と人のリアルなつながりが希薄化し、誰かと共にいても、“姿あれど心ここに在らず”といったような社会現象が立ち現れました。&nbsp; &nbsp; デジタルテクノロジーを設計、実装する際には、人とコンピューターとの健全な関係性を志向し、使用者の体験や利益を害することのないような姿勢で取り組むことが大切です。&nbsp; &nbsp; マーク・ワイザーは、21世紀のコンピューティングの論文の中でこうも論じています。&nbsp; 「森の中は、現在あるどんなコンピューターシステムよりも多くの情報であふれているのに、コンピューターを使うときはフラストレーションを感じて、森の散歩では人々はリラックスする。人間にコンピューターの都合に合わせさせるのではなく、人間の生活環境に合うようにコンピューターを作ることでコンピューターの利用は森の散歩のようにリラックスできるものになるだろう。」&nbsp; &nbsp; ここで提唱された理念が「カーム・テクノロジー」です。mui Labは、この理念に倣うと共に、京都の地で感じられる日本的な所作や習慣、風習など人々の生活や文化での根源的な精神性や暮らしの営みに表れるエッセンスを読み解き、「カーム・テクノロジー &amp; デザイン」として融合させ、UIやUXに取り入れています。人の能力を増幅してくれるテクノロジーが、居心地の悪さを与えず、人の心や空間に溶け込んで暮らしに調和し、愛着を持てる佇まいを目指し、日々研究開発をしております。&nbsp; &nbsp; 我々は、オートメーションによる効率化や生産性のみではなく、逆にそれらが加速するに従い、取り残されていく人間らしさや人間関係における温度感を補完することにデジタルテクノロジーの価値を見出しています。人が暮らしに求めるものは居心地の良さや落ち着き、住まう人がありのままにいられる環境だと考え、人の心が本質的に満ち足りる要素を「余白のデザイン」としてインターフェースや体験設計に取り入れています。&nbsp; &nbsp; デジタルテクノロジーは私たちの生活に密接に関わっていますが、冒頭でも記載したように、コンピューターの本来的な性質は記号情報を扱う精緻で論理的な情報処理であり、それ以外の私達が難なくこなす抽象的で多義的な心情を伝えることや受け手に委ねることは不得意です。&nbsp; 我々の普段の日常生活においては、情動や感情などの非言語情報に関わる感覚情報（体性感覚、触感や質感、温度感など）を用いたコミュニケーションが重要であり、mui Labはそれらを包容できるデジタルテクノロジーのあり方を追求しています。&nbsp; &nbsp; 例えば、mui Labのシグネチャー・プロダクトである「muiボード」は木素材を採用していますが、もっとも人間の文化や生活と関係が深い自然素材である天然木を使うことに代表されるように、五感から得られる身体感覚を大切にしています。木に指で触れてメッセージを描くコミュニケーション機能では、書き手の筆跡がそのまま送信され、受け手との間に情緒的なつながりが醸成されます。また、就寝時にお勧めの段階的調光が可能な照明機能は、太陽のリズム（日の入り）と共にある人の本能的なメカニズムに着目して設計されており、瞬間的なONとOFFのような切り替えではなく、少しづつ変化することが自然から私たちが感じている変化に近いと考え、それを暮らしに取り入れることが、無為自然なデザインの好例ではないかと考えています。&nbsp; &nbsp; 自分らしい暮らしを提唱する「<a href="/ja/works/muihaus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">muihaus.</a>」に取り入れられている「<a href="/ja/works/hashiranokioku/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">柱の記憶</a>」では、人と人とのやり取りの中でこぼれ落ちてしまう繊細な感情の交流を、ある時柱に書きつけられた手書きのメッセージとして空間にたゆたうように浮かび上がらせることで、使い手側に気づきが与えられ、能動的な行動が促されるような設計を盛り込んでいます。&nbsp; &nbsp; 人の暮らしにおけるデジタルテクノロジーの接点を穏やかにする「Calm UI」を通じて、人が人らしい時を過ごせるようになることが我々の目的です。&nbsp; テクノロジーが完璧さをまとうのではなく、日本的な“無常さ”や、侘び寂び的な感覚をも大切にし、感情移入できるような余白を意識して設計や開発に向き合っています。&nbsp; 生活の中にあるデジタルテクノロジーの姿が、まるで家族の一員のように受け入れられ、愛着を感じられるような佇まいであってほしいという思いから、思想、デザイン、エンジニアリングの三位一体のアプローチで、クライアントやパートナーのプロダクトやサービスを通じて社会へお届けしています。&nbsp; &nbsp; mui Labは、デジタルテクノロジーを、心に寄り添う「無為自然」な佇まいにしていくため、本来の人間の豊かさを追求し続けながら、Calm Technology &amp; Designのアプローチとエンジニアリングで、生活の中に温かい手応えをお届けします。&nbsp;

Calm Technology & Design

mui Lab is a startup business working to redefine the relationship between humans and technology. Taking inspiration from the Taoist philosophy of “mui shizen” – which we interpret as “letting it be, or being oneself, as meant by nature” – we create products, designs and services that not only feel like they are natural parts of human life, but also enable us to enjoy our lives more as natural beings. mui Lab has its main office in Kyoto’s 400-year-old furniture district, Ebisugawa Dori. Which is located just south of the circa-1331 Emperor’s Palace. As “technology artisans” (engineers and designers who are modern craftsmen), we enjoy soaking in the tradition and learning from it every day. Our office is a converted “Unagi no Nedoko (Eels’ nest),” Kyoto’s typical townhouse architecture, featuring deep and narrow spaces. Many of the defining features of traditional Japanese houses still exist in homes across Kyoto, including the shoji doors (paper-screen sliding doors) that are used to divide open indoor spaces into smaller rooms, the latticework on the exterior of the house, the tearoom for entertainment, and the “Tokono-ma,” or the alcove for art display, which helps direct one’s attention to the roominess around it. And these design features embody the concept of “tatazumai,” which is central to mui Lab’s design philosophy. The “tatazumai,” or the appearance or atmosphere of someone or something, isn’t simply about the subject; we can consider a “tatazumai” as a reflection of a larger context comprised of various factors, including other people and items inhabiting the same space, the aura exuded by those people and items and their relationships with one another, as well as the outside environment. Humans spend most of their time inside architectural spaces. In creating homes, Japanese often take into account factors related to nature and the outdoor environment. For example, many people factor in the local climate and compass directions in designing the layout, and some others arrange windows and their furniture in such a way that enables them to sense outside activities in their peripheral vision. Japanese always view themselves as part of the outside nature, and that may explain why features that enable them to “sense” one's outside environs are an integral part of Japanese architectural designs. The shoji screen doors are good examples of such Japanese architectural features. These screens separate indoors from the outdoors, and obscure the view of what’s behind them to protect the privacy of the inhabitants, allowing them to focus on their activities. At the same time, the paper screens enable people to notice subtle changes in sunlight and to sense the breeze wafting from the shadows of swaying tree branches. The shoji screens are a prime example of the architectural features that satisfy all of the eight “Calm Technology Basic Principles.” “Tomeishis,” the round rocks used in traditional Japanese gardens as a "boundary-guard stone" to keep people from entering an area, is another great example of calm design. Because “tomeishis” are as small as the human fist in size, wrapped with beautiful palm ropes, they blend naturally with the vista of a garden, serving as a visually more pleasing alternative to standing signboards. They can effectively, but calmly, communicate information to pedestrians. The rocks also prompt people to walk around them, instead of walking over them, out of respect for the natural materials’ rigid “tatazumai,” nudging them to act peacefully. As things around us are increasingly being digitalized, human interactions with technology are becoming a larger part of our daily lives. We believe this makes it all the more important for us to take into consideration our environment and surrounding devices as a whole (including the spaces in which devices are placed, the ways people use devices and act in that space, etc.) in designing digital interfaces and systems. This, rather than simply focusing on the direct interaction between users and smart screens, voice agents, etc. Paying attention to atmosphere in the context of the whole is a design approach that is not only authentically Japanese, but also the key to fulfilling all of the principles of calm technology. Today, every person in society is said to own three or more digital devices. Despite the prevalence of digital devices, user experience designs have much room for improvement, especially in the context of the users’ total well-being. mui Labは、人とテクノロジーの新しい関係性を考えるスタートアップです。老子の謂う無為自然からインスピレーションを得て、「作為的ではなく無為自然に佇む姿勢」と解釈し、人間の暮らしの中において、無為に存在するテクノロジーの存在、ひいては人間が自然と共生する暮らしのあり方を助長するテクノロジーの存在を希求し、プロダクトデザインやサービスを通じて世の中へ提言しています。 私たちは、京都・御所南の400年ほどの歴史を持つ家具の通り、夷川通にオフィスを構えています。現代版のものづくり職人とも言えるエンジニアやデザイナーなどのテックアルチザン達は、日々京都に伝わる伝統の暮らしに触れながら様々な気づきを得られるという、最高の環境に身を置いています。 オフィスは、うなぎの寝床と言われる町屋式の奥に長い空間で、京都らしい建築設計です。 京都には、日本間を仕切る障子や、家の外郭にあしらえる格子、おもてなしの空間としての茶室、余白を表現する床の間など、伝統的な「佇まい」を持つ空間が多く残っています。こういった空間は、mui Labの重要視する「佇まい」を具現化したアプローチでもあります。「佇まい」へのアプローチは、「カーム・テクノロジーの基本原則」に非常に近いものを持ちながらも、より日本の伝統文化が色濃く反映されたものとなっています。 「佇まい」は、人のみならず、空間に置かれるモノ、またそのモノと関わる人の姿や関わる場所、さらにはその場所の周辺環境、関わる人から醸し出される気配など、関わりの周辺を拡大して考えることができます。 私たち人間は、主に建築空間の中で生活をしていますが、日本人は、気候や方角などを目安に家具のレイアウトを決めたり、屋外の様子を周辺視野で窺い知れるように居場所を整えたりします。また、外界とのつながりが強い日本の住宅では、より住環境の中に外の情報が「気配」として埋め込まれるようデザインされているのではないでしょうか。 代表的な例として障子があります。外界と屋内のフィルターとして働き、人の細かな動きをぼかすことで物事に集中することができます。それでいて、外の様子を知りたい時や急な天候の変化の際にはすぐに気づくことができます。障子に落ちた庭技の影の動きから風を感じたり、ふっと暗くなったところから太陽の光が陰り曇ってきたことを感じたりすることがあるでしょう。これは、「カーム・テクノロジーの基本原則」の８原則すべてを満たしているとも言える好例です。 また、止め石（関守石）も、情報提示の仕方としては面白い例でしょう。止め石とは、日本庭園などで立ち入り禁止や岐路での正しい進路を示すために使われる、丸い石に棕櫚縄をかけたモノです。拳程度の小さな石なので、立て看板のように目立つ物とは異なり、庭園の景観を害しません。それでいて、「こちらには進まないでくださいね」という情報を伝えたい相手である歩行者は、すぐに気づくことができます。止め石を超えて進んでいくことも物理的には可能ですが、その静かな佇まいと止め石がまとう緊張感から、穏やかに行動を促します。 モノがデバイス化されていくことによって、テクノロジーと人の関わりが日常風景になりつつある現在においては、パソコンやスマートフォンなどの画面内やボイスエージェントとの一対一のやり取りでのインタラクション設計にのみ注意を置くのではなく、このように周辺環境（モノの置かれている空間、人がそこにいることの背景、その環境で人々が取り得る所作など）を考慮し、インタラクションをデザインすることが、空気を読むこと、間合いを読むことなど、「佇まい」に気を使ってきた日本らしい観点だと考えています。 「一人一台のデバイス」の時代から、「デバイスに共有される時代」に知らず知らずのうちに突入し、今や一人が三台以上のデバイスに囲まれている時代となりましたが、多くのプロダクトやサービスがユーザーにとって真のウェルビーイングが担保されたものにはなり得ていません。コンピューティングをユーザーにとって最適なものにし、人々の幸福感や充足感へつなげるために、今改めて「カーム・テクノロジー」という設計指針が必要なのではないかと考えます。 <a href="http://www.bnn.co.jp/books/10529/ " target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">＊BNN出版「 カーム・テクノロジー（生活に溶け込む情報技術のデザイン）」（mui Lab監修・寄稿）</a> 日本語版特別寄稿「佇まい」のデザインより一部抜粋&nbsp;
