2026年3月4日、東京六本木のAXISギャラリーにて、「プロダクト/UXのためのCalm&nbsp;Tech実践」が開催されました。生活に溶け込む情報技術である「&nbsp;Calm Technology®（以下、カームテクノロジー）」の考え方を推進するアンバー・ケース氏をお招きし、ジャーナリスト林信行氏がファシリテーターを務めました。国内において「カームテクノロジー」を実践してきたmui&nbsp;Labも貴重な登壇の機会をいただきました。&nbsp; 当日は50名を超えるデザイナーや企業関係者にお越しいただき、機運を醸成する一歩となりました。&nbsp; ◾️カームテクノロジーとは？&nbsp;1995年にゼロックス・パロアルト研究所のマーク・ワイザーが提唱した概念を、アンバー・ケースが体系化・発展させたデザイン思想。その核心はシンプルで、「テクノロジーは人間の注意を奪うのではなく、穏やかにするべく、そっと生活に溶け込むべき」というもの。&nbsp;

情報技術やデジタル機器の発展により、人の注意が資源として消費される「アテンション・エコノミー」の現代。「カームテクノロジー」はそのカウンターパートとして世界の名だたる企業から大きく注目されはじめています。&nbsp;&nbsp;イベントでは、林信行氏からまず導入として、カームテクノロジーと日本の美意識の共通点について言及がありました。実は、このカームテクノロジーには、「わび・さび」「間（ま）」「おもてなし」「たたずまい」など、日本の伝統的な文化や美意識と共鳴する部分が多くあります。ケース氏自身も、ソニーや任天堂など日本のプロダクトに囲まれて育ち、その深く考え抜かれたデザインから大きな影響を受けたと語っています。&nbsp;

日本のものづくりに根付く「穏やかな」デザイン 

ケース氏からの講演では、まずカームテクノロジーの基本的な考え方や、理論についての共有がありました。&nbsp;近年カームテクノロジーへの注目が高まる中で、ケース氏は、本来の意図が希薄化されるのを防ぐため、2024年末にCalm Tech Instituteを設立。「Calm Tech Certified™」認証制度をスタートさせました。注意、周辺視野、耐久性、光、音、そして素材という6つのカテゴリーに基づき、ユーザーの負荷を減らすための多様な観点から81項目の評価基準が設けられています。&nbsp;

ケース氏によると、カームテクノロジーとはすなわち、人間が何かするための通過口（Pass-through）として機能するということです。テクノロジー自体が目的ではなく、あくまで人が何かをしたり考えたりするための手段として「生活に溶け込んだ」ものであるべきという考え方です。わかりやすい例として挙げられたのは、バナナの皮。熟すと色が変わり、皮をむかなくても中身の状態が容易にわかります。&nbsp;&nbsp;こうした人間中心設計に基づくデザインは、企業にとってブランドロイヤルティを生むことにもつながります。例えば、ある米国企業が販売する煙探知機は、誤作動が多く、警報音を容易に消せないことが不満につながっていました。そこで、誤報時に人が長い棒やほうきで押せるボタンを追加し人間中心デザインで再設計したところ、市場シェアが大きく拡大した話などが紹介されました。&nbsp;

後半パートでは、参加者同士によるワークショップを実施。講演の内容を自らのプロダクトや業務に落とし込み、実践につなげてもらおうという試みです。&nbsp;当日会場に展示された、実際にカームテック認証を有するプロダクトの評価ポイントを見出すワークのほか、「カームなホテルの部屋を設計するためには？」といったテーマでの意見交換を実施。「エントランスから部屋までのアプローチをあえて長くすることで、宿泊者の心理状態を落ち着かせることにつながるのではないか」といった意見など、多様なバックグラウンドをもつ参加者による有意義な対話が生まれました。&nbsp;

カームテクノロジーを実践につなげる講義と対話

ワークショップでの熱量のまま、最後は国内の業界に向けた機運醸成のメッセージとすべく、実践者であるmui&nbsp;Labからトークセッションを行いました。mui&nbsp;Labは、日々の生活に根ざす行為&nbsp;−例えば、開店をそれとなく知らせるお店の暖簾や、柱に子どもの身長を刻む習慣−&nbsp;からヒントを得て、人に寄り添うテクノロジーのあり方を追求してきました。そのアプローチとカームテクノロジーとの親和性がきっかけとなり、ケース氏とのつながりが生まれた経緯があります。&nbsp;そうした設計思想に基づく&nbsp;「muiボード第2世代」は、国内で初めて「Calm Tech Certified™」の認証を取得。2024年には&nbsp;Calm Tech Institute&nbsp;の日本支部「一般社団法人カームテクノロジー協会」がmui Lab京都本社にて発足しました。&nbsp;空気や照明など空間の状態が人々のウェルビーイングに影響を与えることが分かってきた昨今。今やプロダクト単体の枠を超え、空間にまでその対象が広がりつつある中で、mui Labとしても、空間全体を包括する「くらし」そのものへのアプローチを積極的に進めています。&nbsp;

今回の発起人である林信行氏からは以下のコメントをいただきました。

21世紀初頭のシリコンバレー企業は、強欲かつ無自覚に人々のスクリーンタイム（画面を見ている時間）やアテンションを奪い、ディストピアへと導きつつあった。その反省から、最近では子どものソーシャルメディア利用規制の動きなどが加速している。だが、社会に押しつけられるまでもなく、喧騒に疲れ、テクノロジーとの新しい関係を模索する人々も増えてきた。ここ数年で広がったデジタルデトックス、ポッドキャストなど音声メディアの隆盛、レコードなどのアナログメディアの再流行なども、そうした時代の気分が形になって現れた現象だと言えるだろう。Calm Techは、そうした人々が求めるテクノロジーの形を、認知科学などの視点で体系化しガイドライン化した製品設計の技術であり、今後のデジタルものづくりの重要な指針になると思う。

カームテクノロジーの普及にはまだまだギャップがありますが、今回のイベントは、国内での認知向上への大きな一歩になったと言えます。これから必要になるのは、日本企業の文化的な着眼点やものづくりへの真摯なアプローチにほかなりません。世界に影響を与えうる日本企業とカームテクノロジーの今後の広がりに、ぜひご期待ください。

3/4、AXISギャラリーで、 Calm Technology®推進者のアンバー・ケース氏による  ワークショップイベントを開催しました 

10/24(金)、京都芸術大学にて、mui Lab クリエイティブディレクターの廣部 延安が講義を行いました。プロダクトデザイン学科の学生向けに、muiボードの開発秘話をひも解き、テクノロジーに対する考え方を紹介しました。以下では、当日の講義内容を抜粋しながら、mui Labにおけるプロダクトの原点とこれからをお届けします。

mui Labが求めるくらしの原点になった景色のひとつが、フィンランドの建築家、アルヴァ・アアルト（1898-1976）の自邸です。

空間の中で、目に見えるテクノロジーはほぼ照明のみ。それも間接照明など、必要最小限の柔らかい灯りであり、代わりに大きな窓からは自然光が静かに差し込んでいます。厳しい北欧の冬を穏やかに過ごすための工夫に満ちた、柔らかな空間です。 「この居心地のよさを妨げない形で、空間にテクノロジーをうまく溶け込ませることができないだろうか」 その視点が、mui Labのはじまりであり、muiボードの原点になりました。 一般的に、プロダクトは新しさや機能性を追求して進化していきます。しかし、mui Labにとっての理想のプロダクトは、「家族との時間や、食卓での会話といった日々のくらしを、心地よくするための道具のような存在」です。 便利さだけではなく、人が感じる安心やあたたかさ、記憶に残るやりとり——。それらを支えるためのテクノロジーでありたいとの考えのもと、mui Labのデザイン哲学は形づくられてきました。

もう一つ、人とものの関係性を考える上で、ヒントになった日常の景色があります。 ある朝、いつものようにmui Labの京都オフィスに出勤したときのこと。向かいの料理屋さんが朝の支度をしていました。店の前を掃き、水を撒き、扉を拭き、鉢植えの植物を置き、暖簾をかける。何気ない日々の所作の中で、「もの」が一つのサインとなり、徐々にお店という「場所」が形作られていくことに気づきました。 ものを移動させたり置いたりするだけで、場所に意味が生まれる。その自然な動作がもしネットワークを介してつながれば、くらしに溶け込むテクノロジーを実現できはしないだろうか。 この考えを表現したものが、2022年のミラノデザインウィーク（ミラノサローネ）でmui Labが発表したコンセプト展示です。

カーテンを開ける、テーブルを拭く、食器を置くといった自然な所作を、ものを介して家そのものが認識することで、muiボードにメッセージが浮かび上がり、ゆっくりと照明が灯り、音楽が流れ出す。カメラのように「見張る」のではなく、人とものの接点から情報を受け取ることで、「空間が人にフィードバックする」世界です。 家の中に記憶や体験が積み重なり、やがて家そのものが家族のような存在になる。そんな未来を、mui Labは思い描いています。

では、人と道具の接点としてふさわしいインターフェースとは、一体どのようなものでしょうか。 mui Labのデザイン思想の根底には、「もっとも深い技術とは、生活と一体化し、見えなくなるものである」という「Calm Technology（カームテクノロジー）」の考え方があります。アメリカの研究者マーク・ワイザー氏が提唱し、mui Labのアドバイザーでもあるアンバー・ケース氏が近年発展させてきた考え方です。 「窓」や「金槌（かなづち）」を思い浮かべてみてください。外の景色を見るときに、人は窓枠を意識しません。金槌を使って釘を打つとき、金槌そのものに意識は向かない。存在を忘れていても目的を果たしてくれる道具こそ、理想のインターフェースではないかと考えています。

これらの考えを、私たちなりに一つの形にしたものが「muiボード」です。 muiボード上に表示されるアイコン自体のUI（ユーザーインターフェース）も、人の注意を引きすぎないよう、ちょうどよいバランスを目指しています。 例えば、窓に貼られた障子やシルクカーテン越しに外の風景を見ると、電線や人通りの雑多な景色が、なぜか美しく見えるように、解像度が少し落ちることで、人の目には心地よい情報になるのではないか–——。生活を邪魔するノイズにはならず、でも気配として確かに残る。その絶妙なラインを探求しています。

さらに、昨年提供を開始したmuiボード第2世代では、実際の生活空間を意識し、照明のアイコンは上に、ベッドは下に、設定画面は「地下室」をイメージして最も低い位置に配置しています。 私たちの生活の目線に合わせ、自然な動作や手触りで、理想のくらしの状態を呼び戻すことができる。そう考えると、ミラノデザインウィークの動画で示したかった人と空間の関係性が、いまmuiボード上で再現されつつあるとも言えそうです。

こうしたデザインに対する想いは、今年、muiボードの「グッドデザイン賞」および「キッズデザイン賞」の受賞という形で、ひとつの評価をいただきました。 スマートホームコントローラーとしての利便性だけではなく、「くらしとの調和」や「家族とのコミュニケーション」といった独自の体験価値を持つ点を認めていただき、大変嬉しく思っています。 私たちが積み重ねてきた、「muiらしさ」とは一体何なのでしょうか？ その正体を言語化して、新たなプロダクトやサービスにつなげていく取り組みにも、現在力を入れています。チーム内で言葉やイメージを持ち寄ったところ、harmony（調和）・playful（遊び心）・yohaku（余白）・universal（普遍性）の4つのキーワードが浮かび上がってきました。例えば、playfulであれば、無邪気に水遊びをする子どもや落ち葉の手触りなど、イメージを積み重ねて「muiらしさ」の本質を探るプロセスです。

心地よい時間を過ごすためのプロダクトからスタートしたmui Labは、試行錯誤を重ねながら、くらしの体験価値そのものを創り出す新たな段階へと歩みを進めています。本当の意味でくらしに寄り添う次なるプロダクトやサービスを、皆さまにお披露目できる日も近いかもしれません。 今後のmui Labにも、ぜひご期待ください。

mui Lab Inc. (CEO: Kazunori Oki)&nbsp;is pleased to announce that its HEMS controller, the&nbsp;mui Board, has been selected for the&nbsp;2025 Good Design Award, presented by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. The mui Board was recognized for introducing a uniquely warm, wooden informational interface that brings a new togetherness to your daily life through thoughtful design. HEMS (Home Energy Management System): a system that manages household energy use to promote efficiency and sustainability.

The&nbsp;mui Board&nbsp;is a smart home and HEMS controller crafted from natural wood. It allows users to control IoT appliances such as lighting, air conditioning, and speakers, as well as enable optimal energy management through the visualization of household energy. Compatible with both&nbsp;Matter&nbsp;and&nbsp;ECHONET Lite&nbsp;smart home standards, the mui Board is supported by the Japanese government subsidies aimed at the Green Transformation(GX) housing. mui Lab collaborates with developers including Mitsubishi Estate, Odakyu Real Estate, Shizuoka Gas, and Hokkaido Gas to promote adoption among homebuilders working toward carbon neutrality. mui Lab is also developing an&nbsp;AI-based energy management system&nbsp;that learns individual household energy use patterns to optimize solar power, storage batteries, and other devices.

Unlike conventional HEMS controllers, the&nbsp;mui Board&nbsp;uses&nbsp;wood&nbsp;as its interface. It aims to not only be a control panel, but something that creates value through calm, meaningful interactions. Key ideas to achieve such an experience are as follows. 1.　Integration of warm wood as tactile touch interface Made from real wood, each mui Board gains character over time like your beloved furniture and home. The wooden interface ages with your touches, remembering all of the stories of your home in its aging wood. 2.　A quiet, harmonious design Instead of actively notifying and informing the user like industry smart home controllers, the mui Board melts into your home, filtering the noise to only bring you the information you need when you want them. 3.　Gentle smart home features that connect the home The board connects lighting, audio, and HVAC systems across brands through a unified cloud interface, taking the complexity out of smart home devices and promoting simple and intuitive information design to bring you comfort.

Especially for children of the next generation, I wanted to deliver a tool that helps them intuitively handle information. Featured in Odakyu’s LEAFIA homes, it supports well being and good family communication through functions such as Leave-a-message,&nbsp;time capsule, and&nbsp;motion-based room monitoring, offering small moments of connection in everyday life.

◾️“Thank You! Bright Future Award for Couple” (サンキュ！明るいミライ大賞 for couple) In September 2025, mui Board was selected by the lifestyle magazine&nbsp;Thank You!&nbsp;(“サンキュ！”) as a product that enriches communication between dual working couples and child-rearing parents.

情報デバイスに類する製品はアクリルやガラスなどのパネルに情報を表示することが一般的であるが、本製品はそれを木材にしている点が新しい。その印象はスマートホームコントローラーという製品ジャンルから感じられるハイテクなイメージではなく、ナチュラルで素朴なものであり、情報デバイスをそのような感覚の製品にデザインしたことが評価できる。表示される情報もグラフィカルで直感的であり、親しみやすいものとなっている。（全文引用）

◾️第19回キッズデザイン賞「muiボード」のデザインは、親子のコミュニケーション促進といった文脈において、これまでも評価を受けています。2025年8月には、小田急不動産株式会社（本社：東京都渋谷区 取締役社長：五十嵐 秀）と共同開発した、mui Labが提供する「muiボード」とスマートフォン専用アプリ「mui Homeアプリ」が、特定非営利活動法人キッズデザイン協議会が主催する「第19回キッズデザイン賞」の「子どもを産み育てやすいデザイン部門」において、キッズデザイン賞を受賞しました。

Using mui’s interfaces should be a calm experience that sparks delight and positivity.&nbsp;&nbsp; We believe technology should be able to enrich users’ lives, or it would not be a useful tool for business “services.” We aim to create technologies that can bring peace and comfort to people, thereby inspiring them to be more creative.

1. Inspiring calm moments

mui’s interfaces are designed to transmit a minimum amount of information to help users focus only on what matters.&nbsp;&nbsp; In this digital era, we are constantly inundated with information. In order to live a more mindful life, we need technology to bring us only the information that truly matters in a calm manner, so we can focus on important tasks at hand and spend quality time with our loved ones. We aim to create technologies that are respectful of humans and put the decision-making control back in their hands, instead of telling users what to do. mui’s systems and devices are designed to foster new relationships between humans and technology.

2. Valuing simplicity over complexity

mui’s devices stay out of the user’s sight and consciousness whenever possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; We believe technology should work for humans, and not the other way around. Conventional technology forces people to adjust their behaviors to the requirements of devices that constantly demand their attention. We envision the technology of the future supporting humans in the background, by both visually blending into the surroundings and staying out of users’ consciousness. That’s when technology becomes truly useful to humans.

3. Staying out of users’ way 

mui’s technology will always exist in harmony with the surrounding environment, contributing to its ambience.&nbsp; The most comfortable environment is one with a perfect harmony among all its elements. Calm technology achieves a harmony among humans, technology and the environment, and performs without causing any distraction.

4. Pursuing harmonious beauty 

mui seamlessly integrates the functions of various devices and platforms to make technology feel like a natural part of users’ everyday living.&nbsp;&nbsp; Regardless of how hard we try, it’s not always possible to completely eliminate the gaps between various platforms and their functionalities. We can, however, use design techniques to make these gaps virtually unnoticeable. mui Lab does not create complex systems and devices that come with bells and whistles. We focus on making simple functionalities perform well, so users can accomplish what they want without any confusion or disruption.

5. Achieving seamless integration

mui’s technology delivers calculated “imperfection” mimicking that of nature.&nbsp;&nbsp; Imperfections in nature, such as the rugged surfaces of rocks and old trees, can be quite pleasing to our human touch, providing satisfying sensory feelings to those who caress them. mui embraces the imperfection of natural materials. By integrating intuitive interface technology into these tangible materials, we create visual and haptic devices that provide perfectly satisfying experiences for users.

Designing according to the law of nature

muiとの戯れは、喜びをもたらし、前向きな気持ちを促す&nbsp; テクノロジーによってもたらされた時間を、人が豊かに味わうことができて、はじめて「サービス」と言えるのではないだろうか。そのような、人が心地よくリラックスした状況を生み出すことで、新たな気づきがもたらされる瞬間をテクノロジーで描き出したいと考えている。

1. 穏やかな幸せをもたらすもの

必要最小限の情報に絞ることで、ユーザーは正しい選択に至ることができる&nbsp; 日々忙しい中で考えることは山積みである。時にはマインドフルになり、内面の望む声にも耳を傾けたい。いつでもどこでもほしい情報にアクセスできるのは便利だが、情報過多では注意散漫になり本当に望むことに集中できず、いつの間にか時が経っていた、という感覚は多くの人にとって他人事ではないのではないか。情報側の意図に振り回されるのではなく、主体的、能動的に選べる自由を尊重したい。&nbsp; 人と情報の関係性をリ・デザインし、その人や状況にとって相応しい情報のみを選択しやすい状態を設計することが望ましいと考える。

2. 必要最小限である  

ユーザーが情報を必要としない限りは静かに佇む。お役立ち者でありながら邪魔にならない謙虚者 人とテクノロジーの関係性においては人が主体であり、テクノロジーに主導権があるのは違和感を感じます。テクノロジーの進展によってできることは増えたが、現状は人が合わせることを強要され、人にとってのテクノロジーになっていません。また、そのようなテクノロジーは得てして存在感を主張してきます。テクノロジーはまだ未熟で発展途上です。本来のテクノロジーのふさわしいあり方は、人が望む事を叶えるために背景に溶け込んだ状態です。テクノロジーの存在を忘れたときにそのテクノロジーは本当に役に立つ状態なのではないでしょうか。

3. 主張せず控えめである

周りの環境と調和し、美しい雰囲気を醸成する&nbsp; 人にとっての心地良さとは、置かれた環境全体が調和していてストレスのない状態だと考える。人の心に寄り添うテクノロジーは、環境に調和して、それ自体が際立って人の注意を引くようなものでないようにしたい。

4. 置かれた環境と調和する

システムどうしの継ぎ目を滑らかにすることで、ユーザーに寄り添う&nbsp; 機能と機能の間を移動する時には物理的な溝に対面する。その隙間をなくすことはできないが、人がそれを意識することがないような配慮が大切である。使う人にとって、機能間の不連携に煩わされるのではなく、ただシンプルに望むことが達成されることが重要であり、それを叶えるテクノロジーの存在を設計したい。

5. 溶け込み馴染むもの

無作為な自然の持つ古びの美、滅びの美である侘び寂びを賞賛する&nbsp; 自然は常に変化し、時が経てば人も物も古びていく。そのありのままの姿に美を見出したい。&nbsp; 抗うのではなく、大きな流れのなかに無為自然に佇むあり方、その見えづらい価値を応用したい。&nbsp; 自然に触れると喜びを感じるように、人と自然の関係性を直感的なインターフェースとして昇華し、デジタルデバイスに触れることで喜びの瞬間を感じられる関係性を作り出したい。

We are delighted to announce that mui Lab has won over the jury&nbsp;at the sixth edition of the Archiproducts Design Awards in the category Systems, Components and Materials for its concept and design, the annual prize celebrating worldwide design excellence!&nbsp; The <a href="https://awards.archiproducts.com/jury-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">jury</a> made up of architects, journalists, photographers and creative directors from all over the world assessed over 750 submissions and selected the best proposals.&nbsp;&nbsp; <a href="https://www.archiproducts.com/en/products/mui-lab/smart-home-interface-mui-m1_445072" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Here</a> is the page for mui Lab as an honoree.&nbsp; A dedicated jury of specialists in eco-design and sustainability within the field of architecture and design have also awarded our product with the “2021 special Mention for Sustainability”, this year’s new ADAs award for products that adhere to a logic based on the circular economy concept. Below explains what is our product of mui M1 and our sustainable approach to contribute to the society.&nbsp; The wooden mui board, named mui M1, has three functions: a smart home control hub to control lighting, air conditioning, speakers, etc., an information posting function to get information about weather, radio news, family events, etc., and a communication function to bring emotional value to the family. These are the three functions of the system. Compared to existing smart home devices, the mui board is a device that encourages users to feel and think about other users, instead of drawing their attention, and allows them to converse with them through text and voice messages. Because it is made of wood, a natural material, users can naturally achieve a state of calmness and gentleness by touching the mui board. In addition, people who receive messages through the mui board can see the sender’s handwritten message and voice, which gives a warmer impression compared to the traditional exchange of messages in a standardized font. The mui board is a medium to convey words of gratitude, appreciation and care that are difficult to communicate between family members who has become in a relationship that things are taken for granted or too embarrassed to say to each other. Just by writing a few words while the other person is asleep or away, a single word may become a catalyst to start a new relationship. We at mui Lab approach people in order to implement essential and fundamental sustainability. Since human thoughts and actions create the reality of this world, we believe that approaching the human senses is the most fundamental and efficient method. Nowadays, wellbeing is being actively promoted, and the market size is increasing year by year, but to achieve the essential wellbeing of human beings means to be connected to nature and live a life with a perspective of wholeness. In order to achieve this, we believe it is important for humans to be designed in the direction of acting intentionally for the benefit of the whole. One of the guiding principles of this way of thinking is “mui-shizen” as Lao-Tzu said, which is also the origin of the name of our company, mui Lab. As a technology company, we design and implement technologies that support and encourage people to build good relationships with others and nature in a natural way. That is why we create&nbsp;the products that are used in our daily lives and services with a message that has valuable meaning to the society, so that these ideas and senses naturally become behavioral guidelines and integrated into our daily lives as a matter of course. mui Lab aims to be a technology company that brings sustainable ways of thinking and acting to society through an approach to the human spirit and mind, and to be an agent through which humans can work better for life as a whole. In terms of material sustainability, mui is also unique: when the mui board is turned off, it disappears into the interior like a piece of furniture. It could also be used as a shelf to store things. Since family members try to leave messages to other members through the mui board, it can easily become a companion of the family, just like the existence of a pillar or wall as an object to carve the height of a child or a picture to enjoy the growth of a child. A mui board engraved in your mind will stay with your family and make your relationship better. In other words, even if it is not connected to the Internet, or if it is broken and no longer functions, it will still serve an invisible function in terms of appealing to the heart. Compared to existing digital devices and IoT devices that require replacement after a few years, mui will be a product that people will want to use for a long time because it harmonizes not only with the interior but also with the human mind. It is truly a wabi-sabi way of thinking. Our ideal is for people to be able to use mui for a long time with affection, as an existence that has a sad beauty even after it withers, or an appearance that may appeal something to some viewers, which we call it “Tatazumai of technology”.&nbsp;
