mui lab&nbsp;will exhibit our new conceptual model at the “The Year 2121: Futures In-Sight” , the exhibition hosted by 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT’ which open on 21 December, 2021. The Exhibition takes the stance of “thinking about the future,” to provide opportunities for nurturing rich insights into how we might create a tomorrow through the medium of design. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT’s exhibition “The Year 2121: Futures In-Sight” will open on 21 December, 2021. The exhibition director is Michiaki Matsushima, an editor who has published numerous books and magazines, all revealing his interest in issues relating to the future. His perspectives consider how technologies bring change to our cultures and styles of living. The term “20/20 vision” is used in English to denote perfect sight. The name, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT refers to our wish to provide a place where people can look far into the future. One hundred years from the opening of this exhibition will fall in the year 2121. Our concept is to ponder how the world will look in a year which is coincidentally also the name of this institute. Since ancient times, humankind has made predictions and prophecies about the future, whether tomorrow’s weather, or the prosperity of the nation. We have recently gained more confidence in the process, thanks to the detailed and elaborate prognoses now available via advancing technology of analysis and measurement of information. Yet, in every case, from the very beginning of time, ‘the future’ has been more than just an extension of the past. The experience of global pandemic has brought drastic and widespread changes to our life-style, communication methods and sense of community, as well as to people-values and general ways of thinking. It has brought home to us how unpredictable the future really is. This exhibition employs a tool called “Future Compass” to trigger ideas about the future. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and scholars, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown. The participants’ ideas constitute the exhibition content, which will multiply into future forms, like flourishing plants. About “The Year 2121: Futures In-Sight”

mui Labは、2021年12月21日より21_21 DESIGN SIGHTにて開催される「2121年 Futures In-Sight」展に出展します。 「2121年 Futures In-Sight」展は、「Future Compass」（未来の羅針盤）というツールをきっかけに、未来を思い描くだけでなく、現在を生きる私たちの所作や創り出すものに内在する未来への視座を、デザイナーやアーティスト、思想家、エンジニア、研究者など、多彩な参加者たちとともに可視化していくことを試みるものです。身近な存在からまだ見ぬ他者、それらをめぐるさまざまな時間軸へ思いを馳せる中から生まれた未来にまつわる多彩な視座が会場に集結し、繁茂する草木のごとく複数形の未来を形成していくものと期待されます。 「未来」を考えるという姿勢自体を示す本展は、現在を生きる私たちとこれからを生きる世代にとって、デザインとともに明日を創造していくための豊かな洞察力（Insight）を養う機会となることを目的としています。 テクノロジーが人類の文化やライフスタイルをいかに変えるのか、その未来を見据えた数多くの書籍や雑誌を手がける編集者の松島倫明氏が展覧会ディレクターを務められます。

壁に掛けられて家族のメッセージを届けてきたmuiボードは、いつしか動かなくなったようだ。​ そこに残された傷やメッセージの焼き付いた表情は、家族の歴史が垣間見られる家具のように、大切な思い出での痕跡となり、未だその場所に掛けられている。​​ いつしか、家族の日常的なコミュニケーションの場は壁面そのものへと役割を移していた。家族間で交わされたメッセージの軌跡がふとした瞬間に壁に浮かび上がる度、にまりと笑ったり、もの想いに耽ったりする。​ かつて存在した家族の像がリアルに呼び起こされる。

壁に設置された mui ボードは、すでに製品寿命が尽きたため、ネットワークへの接続がなく、LED 表示も劣化して正常には点灯できない状態であるが、かつて使われていたことを示す名残として、表面木目が内部 LED の長時間の照射によって焼けて跡形が見えるようになっている。muiボードの少し上の壁面真ん中あたりに、タイプライターのように表示されるメッセージと、それに回答するように誰かの手書きのメッセージが交互に現れ、会話がなされていることが想像できる。(情報の壁面への浸透) 100 年後の未来において、家族のコミュニケーションの一部は環境側に蓄積され、それをなんらかのトリガーによって見たり聞いたり体験することが可能になっていると想定する。 今回の展示では、家族によって紡がれた特定の時間を壁面にダイアローグ(対話)として表示する。そのことで家族の何気ない日々のやり取りが、家族の時間として残されていることを示したい。 壊れたmuiボードは、2021 年時点での製品が壊れてもなお、家族の思い出を残しているかのように部屋の壁にかけられているが、本来の用途としてはすでに使うことができないことを壁面情報表示と対照させることで、かつての情報機器としての muiボード、2121 年時点での壁面インターフェースが同じ家族の記憶を残していることを示したい。 「2121年 Futures In-Sight」オープニングトークにて、松島倫明さんにご紹介いただました！

「2121年 Futures In-Sight」展の概要 英語では優れた視力を「20/20 Vision (Sight)」と表現します。 私たちの「21_21 DESIGN SIGHT」という名称は、さらにその先を見通す場でありたいという、「未来」にむけた想いからつけられました。 この展覧会が始まる2021年から、ちょうど100年後–。私たちの活動の名称と同じ数字を持つ100年後の世界に想いを巡らせるところから、本展の構想は始まりました。 古くから人々は、明日の天気から国の繁栄まで、まだ見ぬ先の世界を捉えるために、さまざまな予言や予測を行ってきました。 近年では、情報解析や計測に関するテクノロジーの著しい進歩に伴い、より精緻な予測が可能になっているように感じられるかもしれません。しかし、そもそも「未来」は過去の延長線上にだけ存在するわけではありません。 現在、私たちは、世界的なパンデミックを体験し、生活様式やコミュニティのあり方、コミュニケーションの手法などにはじまり、物事の考え方や価値観など、ありとあらゆるものが劇的に変化していく様子を目の当たりにしています。 そのことは「未来」がいかに未知なるものであるかを私たちに強く実感させることとなりました。 本展は「Future Compass」（未来の羅針盤）というツールをきっかけに、未来を思い描くだけでなく、現在を生きる私たちの所作や創り出すものに内在する未来への視座を、デザイナーやアーティスト、思想家、エンジニア、研究者など、多彩な参加者たちとともに可視化していくことを試みます。身近な存在からまだ見ぬ他者、それらをめぐるさまざまな時間軸へ思いを馳せる中から生まれた未来にまつわる多彩な視座は、会場に集結し、繁茂する草木のごとく複数形の未来を形成していくものとなるでしょう。 「未来」を考えるという姿勢自体を示す本展は、現在を生きる私たちとこれからを生きる世代にとって、デザインとともに明日を創造していくための豊かな洞察力（Insight）を養う機会となることを目指します。

mui lab has been exhibiting our new conceptual model at the “The Year 2121: Futures In-Sight” , the exhibition hosted by 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT’ which will be open until May 8, 2022. The exhibition “2121 Futures In-Sight” is an attempt to visualize, with the help of a tool called “Future Compass”, the perspective on the future inherent in our actions and creations in the present, together with a diverse group of designers, artists, thinkers, engineers and researchers. A variety of perspectives on the future born from thinking about the familiar, the yet unseen, and the various timelines surrounding them will gather at the venue, and are expected to form a plurality of futures like a flourishing plant.

The aim of the exhibition is to provide an opportunity for those of us who live in the present and the future to develop a rich insight into how we can work with design to create the future.

The director of the exhibition is Matsushima Michiaki, the editor of numerous books and magazines on the future of how technology will change human culture and lifestyle.

mui Lab has chosen the compass How / Time / Feel ? and raised the below question.&nbsp; “How do we remember the transition of our family time?”

The mui board, which has been hanging on the wall to deliver family messages, seems to have stopped moving for some time. The scratches on the board and the burned expression of the messages are traces of precious memories, like a piece of furniture that gives a glimpse of a family’s history, still hanging in its place. After some decades, the wall itself has become a place of daily communication for the family instead. Whenever the traces of messages exchanged between family members appear on the wall, we smile and think about them. The image of the family that once existed is evoked in a very real way.

reached the end of its life, and the LED display has deteriorated to the point where it cannot light up properly, but as a reminder of its former use, the surface grain of the wood has been burned by the long exposure to the internal LEDs, and traces of it can be seen. In the middle of the wall, a little above the mui board, a typewriter-like message appears on the wall itself alternately with someone’s hand-written message in response to it, suggesting that a conversation is taking place. (suggesting the penetration of information into the wall) In the future, 100 years from now, part of the family’s communication will be stored in the environmental side, and it will be possible to see, hear and experience it by some kind of trigger. In this exhibition, specific moments of family communication will be displayed as dialogues on the wall. By doing so, we would like to show that the casual daily interactions of the family remain as family’s valuable time. By contrasting the wall information display with the fact that the broken mui board is no longer usable for its original purpose, we want to show that the mui board as an information device in the past and the wall interface in the year 2121 retain the same family memories. Our exhibit was introduced at the opening talk session of “2121 Futures In-Sight” !

mui Lab has collaborated with artist Soichiro Mihara to create a work for the <a href="https://kyoto-steam.com/program/event01/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kyoto Steam 2022 International Art Competition</a>. The Kyoto Steam 2022 International Art Competition is an unique international competition held as part of Kyoto Steam – a festival of global cultural exchange – in which artists, companies and research institutions create works through dialogue and exhibit and be awarded. Out of the 41 companies and research institutes and 111 work plans that entered the call for entries during 2020, the jury has selected 11 groups of artists and companies. These 11 groups has collaborated with the aim of embodying the possibilities of “Art x Science x Technology”.

Science / technology utilized: mui board, sensor technology, custom software

Aiming to make art that openly engages with the world, Soichiro Mihara began working with sound art methods to respond to the aural environment. He then expanded into works consisting of devices that render visible, in exhibition spaces, a variety of elements inherent to the natural environment, such as radiation, air currents, humidity, and bubbles, of which we have become increasingly conscious amid changing social conditions. His works, resembling miniature gardens meticulously created through media technologies, give the impression of representing various cycles continuously unfolding on a global scale. These characteristics of Mihara’s practice are also present in this work, produced in collaboration with mui Lab, Inc., and based around the mui lab’s “mui board.” Symbolizing the company’s core concept of “Calm Technology &amp; Design,” the mui board is an interface that enables access to information on the Internet or data entered by the user without visually disrupting the tranquil atmosphere of daily life. Mihara and mui Lab, Inc. made the mui board the centerpiece of this project, and produced a work that connects the “here and now” with the distant beyond. It can be described as an endeavor to create a circuit, at a comfortable human scale, that links to something vast and universal. A chair is placed in the center of a circular space surrounded by a curtain. Participants who sit on the chair with the mui board on their laps will find that the chair is capable of rotating slowly. Like a compass directed toward the outside world, the mui board displays a minimal scene from a live camera in a city located somewhere in the direction the viewer is facing. The action of the mui board is accompanied by changes in the space that seem to complement the digitized scene, and a narrative commences, with flickering colors, air currents and scents evoking some distant place. This work provides not only information, but also empty space for the viewer to imagine what lies outside that information. The space created by this calm technology sets the imagination free and connects the “here and now” with the beyond.

mui Labは、アーティストの三原聡一郎氏とのコラボレーションで制作した作品を、<a href="https://kyoto-steam.com/program/event01/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kyoto Steam 2022 国際アートコンペティション</a>に出展しています。 Kyoto Steam 2022 国際アートコンペティションは、<a href="https://kyoto-steam.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kyoto Steam -世界文化交流祭-</a>の一環で行われる、アーティストと企業・研究機関が、対話を重ね制作した作品を展覧し、表彰する、日本で類を見ない形式の国際コンペティションです。 2020年度中に実施した公募にエントリーした41件の企業・研究機関と111件の作品プランの中から、審査会によって11組のアーティストと企業等の組合せが選抜されました。 この11組が「アート×サイエンス・テクノロジー」の可能性を体現することを目指し、コラボレーションを行うものです。

三原聡一郎の作品は、常に開かれたシステムとしてある。環境音に呼応するサウンドアートの手法を用いて開始された制作は以降拡張され、社会状況の変化に応じて意識化されてきた環境放射線、気流、空気中の湿度、発泡体といった自然環境に備わる空気の要素を、展示空間内で可視化する装置を作品化してきた。メディア・テクノロジーを用いて簡潔に作られた箱庭のようなその作品群は、地球規模で生じている様々な循環を現しているかのような印象を与えるものである。 三原の作品に備わるこうした特徴は、 mui Lab株式会社とのコラボレーションによって制作された本作においても引き継がれている。制作の起点となったのは、mui Lab株式会社の「mui ボード」である。同社のコンセプト「Calm Technology &amp; Design（穏やかなテクノロジーのデザイン）」を象徴する「mui ボード」は、日常生活の穏やかな雰囲気を乱すことのない佇まいを持つ一方で、インターフェースとして、インターネット上にある情報や利用者が入力した情報にアクセスすることを可能とする。三原とmui Lab株式会社は、こうした「mui ボード」を制作の中心に置き、「いま・ここ」とどこか遠く場所とを結びつける本作を制作した。それは、遠大なものへと通じる回路を、人の身体に馴染むスケールで作り出す試みであるとも言って良い。 円形のカーテンで覆われた空間の中央に、椅子が置かれている。その椅子に「mui ボード」を膝の上に乗せて座ると椅子はゆったりと回転することができることに気づくだろう。「mui ボード」は世界のコンパスの様に、向けた方角に存在する都市のライブカメラによるミニマムな光景が表示されてゆく。こうした「mui ボード」のふるまいと共に、空間内に、二値化された光景を補うかのような色の揺らめきと、彼の地を想像させる気流や香りによる空気の物語が始まる。 本作は、情報を提供するともに、その情報の外にある物事を想像するための余白を鑑賞者に提供する。穏やかなテクノロジーが生むその余白が私たちの想像力に自由を与え、「いま・ここ」と彼の地を結びつける。
